What tires do I run?!

In our team's travels and experiences, one of the most common questions asked in preparation regards tires. Whether racing or riding The Journey, good preparation will ensure a great experience. Fitness aside, that preparation goes from the ground up! And so, in the first of our series on the right gear for The Journey we thought it prudent to cover tires.

The Appalachian Journey - Maxxis Tires

Our go-to choice for tires across all terrain are Maxxis tires. With a US Headquarters near Atlanta, Georgia, Maxxis does a tremendous amount of testing in the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains near Ellijay GA. This means their testing pushes tires to the limit on the same kinds of terrain as The Journey. Whether you choose a fast rolling 29er, a wide clearance road bike, or a full-tilt gravel machine, Maxxis has all of bases covered.

The seasoned gravel guru will know the Maxxis Rambler by name. Possibly the winningest gravel tire available, the Rambler has won Gravel Worlds, Dirty Kanza, and more. The Rambler 38 is also the choice of some of our team who spend most of their miles on The Journey's 65 and 110 courses. Fit to a moderately wide rim, the Rambler 38 is a great go-to for The Journey.

Roadies among you seeking your slice of The Journey can look to the Velocita AR or Re-Fuse for their smooth rolling needs. A good slick is a great option for The Journey. More than a few miles of road connect our gravel sectors. 110 riders may find some miles of their course befits a nice fast rolling slick tire. For those rolling "skinnies" look no further than the Re-Fuse or Velocita AR.

The intrepid mountain biker shouldn't shy away from bringing their favorite steed to The Journey. We believe its not about the bike and in some segments of the 65 and 100 those big wheels and suspension will absolutely be the fastest option. Our team are fans of the Maxxis Pace and Aspen in those scenarios where speed and grip are both priorities.

Any of the above are our recommendations for a safe and successful Journey. Tubeless is a must on The Journey course and stay tuned here for our recommendation about tubeless options which our team Journeys on regularly!
